New book on soil management published
Soil - how to take care of it and how to manage it well. The new educational and popularization book by Miloslav Šimek from the Biology Centre of the CAS is published thanks to the AV21 Strategy Programme "Landscape Conservation and Restoration", the theme "Soil - the key to fighting drought, mitigation and adaptation to global change". The book is intended for all those interested in farming in the garden and in the field.
The first part of the book introduces the basic principles of soil care; the second, more comprehensive part focuses on soil properties and soil functioning, with an emphasis on biological processes and soil organism communities. It is written in a form that can be understood by anyone interested in garden and field management. It aims to remind practitioners, especially gardeners and farmers, of good and proven farming practices that do not damage the soil but, on the contrary, keep it in good condition.
Soil is necessary for life and it is a basis of civilization. In addition to producing food, feed, fibre and other products, soil is of vital importance in the landscape, where it, among other things, absorbs, retains and cleans water, breaks down organic matter and hazardous chemicals, and co-creates a healthy environment. Good quality and healthy soil is a prerequisite for life and prosperity. That is why we need to look after the soil.
