Life in a standard and in Bt corn field

The movie „Life in a standard and in Bt corn field“ is a suitable teaching aid to be used both for disciples attending basic school and students attending high school. The field represents except for main product, maize, also fundamentally important community of insects, living in the soil, who is indispensable for proper function of agriculture. These are little assistants who are treating, aerating and fertilizing the soil. Other field habitants are reducing expansion of weeds and eliminating organisms who we share harvest with. Occasional visitors, who pollinate plants, are no less important. It is also us who by our own activity significantly influence life in the field; and if we wish to preserve fertile fields, our interventions in the field must be more gentle then they are now. Chemical agents, which is today agriculture based on, are too much drastic on nature. A chance for future is represented by exploitation of genetically modified crops. Cultivating of so called “Bt maize” spreads very quickly all around the world. Term “Bt maize” means that there was a gene responsible for resistance against the most significant pest - european corn borer - transferred from soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis into maize. The bacterium is being used in ecological agriculture and more than 50 years long experience proved absolute harmlessness of transferred gene on human. The movie demonstrates that the field seeded with Bt maize lives the same rich life as conventional field does.
